Junk removal companies can't take hazardous materials — that's the short version. Wet paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline, asbestos, medical waste, and propane tanks all require licensed hazardous-waste handling and can't ride in a standard truck.
Typically not accepted
These need a hazardous-waste program or a specialty contractor.
- Liquid paint, stains, solvents, and thinners
- Motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids
- Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and cleaning chemicals
- Asbestos-containing materials and suspected asbestos insulation
- Medical and biohazard waste, including sharps
- Propane tanks, oxygen tanks, and other pressurized cylinders
- Ammunition, fireworks, and explosives
Things people assume are off-limits but aren't
Dried latex paint (fully hardened), household batteries, electronics, mattresses, tires, and appliances with refrigerant are all handled routinely — some just carry a disposal fee.
