What happens to junk after it is removed?
It gets sorted, not just dumped. Usable furniture and household goods go to donation partners, metal and electronics go to recyclers, yard waste goes to compost, and only what's left after that goes to the county disposal system.
The sorting order
Every load gets triaged in roughly this sequence, because it's both better practice and cheaper than tipping everything.
- Donate — clean furniture, working appliances, housewares, and tools
- Recycle — scrap metal, appliances, electronics, clean cardboard
- Compost — brush, branches, leaves, and yard waste
- Dispose — everything remaining, through the county waste system
Lancaster County specifics
Residual waste in Lancaster County is managed through the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority, which processes municipal waste at a waste-to-energy facility rather than sending it straight to a landfill. Metal, appliances, and electronics are routed to local recyclers before the load ever reaches a transfer station.
Documentation
Commercial and estate clients can request a record of where materials went. For electronics, we can route items to a certified e-waste recycler when a certificate is needed.
